Abstract

Storbybibliotekundersøkelsen 2025 has aimed to map the use of Norwegian big-city libraries though focus group interviews, a survey, and “tracking the traffic” (TTT) Central questions for the data collection are tied to usage patterns in main libraries and branches, use of staffless libraries, time spent at libraries — and not least whether it is possible to see changes since the previous big-city survey in 2015. To make the data more accessible, we have, as in previous surveys, created user profiles that capture important trends in the material.

Overall, the survey shows that big-city libraries still have a heterogeneous user base, and the libraries provide space for both quiet, focused work as well as events and social gatherings. Borrowing and returning books remains the most used service in all libraries, but study spaces and events also rank highly. Because different methods have been used, we cannot directly compare findings from earlier surveys with figures from 2025. Nevertheless, the following trends in the material are worth noting:

Users spend, on average, approximately the same amount of time at the library as in 2015, as shown by both self-reporting from the questionnaire and traffic tracking.

Cultural and debate events are well attended and are important for a large share of respondents, especially women over 60.

Focus group interviews confirm that library users appreciate the accessible and versatile meeting-place offered by the library. Survey respondents indicate that good seating areas and hang out areas are important for them— not least the younger respondents.

Branches and main libraries are used differently, in the sense that people spend more time at main libraries, while branch libraries are more frequently used by families and those who borrow/return books.

Staffless libraries are used steadily throughout the week, mainly by those who already use the physical library, especially as a place for work or study, or by families on the weekends.

Users of the big-city libraries are happy with their libraries their libraries—over 95% are satisfied or very satisfied with the overall library services.
