Teaching time in geography
A didactic approach to understanding the chronology of the landscapes of Norway (coasts, fjords, forests, lakes, mountains, and high arctic)
Sammendrag
The aim of this book is to propose a methodology to address the notion and didactics of time in Geography, facilitating its teaching and understanding in education. Time is a tremendously complex concept due to its abstract nature, and in Geography teaching, the notion of space often prevails over that of time. Our aim with this book is to present a novel methodology based on the identification, interpretation, explanation, and relationship of each of the elements of different ages (from millions of years to minutes or seconds) that make up the complex geographical space or landscape. Specifically, the book covers real cases representative of the Norwegian Subarctic and Arctic landscapes: coasts, forests, fjords, mountains, and High Arctic. In each of these cases, work have been based on photographs, aerial and satellite imagery, and field campaigns to obtain in situ observations. In addition, we have not only worked with past time but also with present (current environmental situation) and future (environmental threats and probable climate and global change scenarios).
The target audience for this book includes Geography teachers at all levels, from primary school to upper secondary, undergraduate, and graduate education. This work provides a knowledge base in the form of a literature review on the selected landscapes.
